Dan O'Grady goes back to North Dakota in 1983 from Ireland, where he was born. There, he kidnaps a leprechaun and steals his pot of gold. After O'Grady buries the treasure, he finds out that the bad leprechaun followed him home and killed his wife. Using a four-leaf clover, O'Grady takes away the leprechaun's powers and puts him in a box. He had a heart attack before he could burn him.
The O'Grady farmhouse is rented by J. D. Redding and his daughter Tory, now a teenager, ten years later. Nathan Murphy, his 10-year-old brother Alex, and their dopey friend Ozzie Jones are working as contract workers to renovate the farmhouse. While exploring the cellar, Ozzie overhears the leprechaun calling for help and mistakes him for a little child. As soon as the old four-leaf clover is freed from the carton, the leprechaun is free to go. The leprechaun tells Ozzie that he's a shoemaker from Ireland who came to America in quest of better opportunities. Ozzie fails to convince the others that he saw a leprechaun, but he does spot a rainbow, which he follows in the hopes of finding a pot of gold at its end. Worried that Ozzie would hurt himself, Alex decides to pursue him. With a wave of his wand, a bag holding one hundred gold coins appears before Ozzie. After Ozzie examines the gold and accidentally swallows a coin, thinking that doing so would cure his brain damage, they bury the loot in a deep, ancient well.
J. D. gets tricked by a leprechaun on the farm into walking into a trap by the leprechaun posing as a cat and biting his hand, causing him pain. After Tory and the others have brought the leprechaun to the hospital, he rides away on a three-wheeled bicycle. When Alex and Ozzie proceed to a pawn shop to determine the authenticity of the gold, the leprechaun kills the store's proprietor, Joe, for stealing his gold, and then polishes Joe's shoes before fleeing the scene. When the leprechaun was on his way back to the farm, he decided to build himself a go-kart but was pulled over by the police officer because he was going too fast. The officer is chased by the leprechaun into the woods, where the leprechaun eventually takes his life at the hands of the officer. The leprechaun returns to the farm and begins searching for his treasure while also polishing the shoes of everyone he encounters. After accompanying J. D. to the medical facility, the group makes their way back to the farmhouse. When Nathan goes outside to investigate after discovering that it has been plundered, he is hurt by a bear trap that was placed by a leprechaun. Outside, the mob launches an assault on the leprechaun and begins to beat him with rocks and clubs.
When they find a gun in the house, they shoot the leprechaun many times. When it doesn't work, they try to leave, but the leprechaun has broken the engine of their truck. After crashing the car with the go-kart, the leprechaun scares the group until Ozzie admits that he and Alex found the pot of gold. Tory gets the bag out of the well and gives it to the leprechaun. They go to the hospital, certain that the worst is over. As the leprechaun counts his money, he realizes that Ozzie ate the last coin he had. He threatens them because he thinks they're trying to trick him, but Ozzie tells them that O'Grady had a stroke and was sent to a nursing home. The gang distracts the leprechaun by throwing dirty shoes at him. The leprechaun has to go shine the shoes while Tory gets in her jeep and drives away. Tory goes to the house to learn how to kill the leprechaun.
The leprechaun pretends as O'Grady in the nursing home. The leprechaun follows Tory down to the elevator and, as the latter flees, throws O'Grady's body down the elevator shaft as Tory escapes. O'Grady informs her that the only way to kill the leprechaun is with a four-leaf clover, which just so happens to grow in a vast area outside the farm, before dying away. Tory goes back to the farmhouse to seek for a clover, but the leprechaun attacks and she is rescued by Nathan and Ozzie. The leprechaun is injured badly while trying to get the final gold coin, which Ozzie admits to having eaten. Alex takes a four-leaf (blog post) clover that Tory unearthed, connects it to a wad of gum, and shoots it into the leprechaun's mouth, causing him to melt away before he can kill Ozzie. Despite tumbling into the well, the leprechaun's skeleton crawls out and proclaims, "I want my gold." After Nathan drives the leprechaun back into the well, he uses gasoline to light both things. When the police show there, Tory is reunited with her father, marries Nathan, and they have a kid. The leprechaun says he won't stop until he recovers every single piece of his money as the cops explore the well's debris.

George Lucas is well-known for his involvement in the casting of Warwick Davis in Willow. The reason why is less well-known. Davis was reportedly under contract to Lucas, and Lucas had to grant him permission to participate in the film. As a consequence, towards the conclusion of the film, he was granted a "special thanks" credit. This little-known truth adds to the film's appeal among horror lovers. Initially, the leprechaun was intended to return to Ireland. However, there was a problem: the Irish actor portraying the leprechaun, Warwick Davis, lacked a work visa. In order to shoot the last sequence, Davis was required to secure a visa within three days, which is normally impossible. Fortunately, Vice President Dan Quayle's administration was able to expedite the procedure, allowing Davis to complete shooting on time.
